Self-taught, he began painting during the long convalescence from a serious illness. Around 1940 he exposed his early works, influenced by Miró and Klee for the use of iconography and the magic subject. In the mid-fifties Tàpies achieves international recognition for his work. Among the museums where he has exhibited are: The Museum of Modern Art, the Guggenheim Museum in New York, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles, the Institute of Contemporary Arts and the Serpentine Gallery in London, the New National Gallery in Berlin, the Kunsthaus Zürich, the Musée d'Art moderne de la Ville de Paris, the Jeu de Paume, the Centre Pompidou in Paris, Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia in Madrid, the Institut Valencià d’Art Modern in Valencia and the Museu d'Art Contemporani de Barcelona.
Since 1984 there is a foundation named after him in Barcelona.
