* 1935, Toledo
Rafael Canogar is one of the founders of the artgroup El Paso (1957). In 1960 he participated with exponents of the young avant-garde in the exhibition of New Spanish Painting and Sculpture at the Museum of Modern Art (MOMA) in New York. His work evolved from the abstract informality to the social criticism painting in three dimensions.
In his beginnings Canogars used exclusivly oil on canvas but from that exchanged into the use of materials such as polyester, acrylic, wood and fiberglass, which served to compose his collages and his works, sometimes half sculpture and  half painting. Since 1975 his work reached a geometric character of special significance, which has been maintained through the years. In 1971 he won the Grand Prize of the Bienal of Sao Paulo and in 1983 received the National Prize of Plastic Arts.
